Summary:Nearly all low-level radioactive waste in the USA has been disposed of in five government and six commercial shallow land-burial sites in unconsolidated silts and clays, glacial- fluvial deposits, weathered shales, and volcanic tuffs. The total inventory as of 1976 was 1.7 X 106 m3, this including approx 860 kg Pu and having a total activity of 1.3 X 107 Ci. Waste 3H has migrated up to 700 m in the groundwaters beneath 8 of the sites. Other nuclides such as 60Co, 137Cs, 90Sr, and transuranics have migrated shorter distances. Organic complexing appears to be a potentially significant transport factor at some sites. Arid-zone sites appear to have the least potential for nuclide migration in groundwater.
