Summary:The management of radioactive wastes has become a major concern. The conversion of liquid wastes arising in the course of spent fuel reprocessing and their conditioning for final disposal have reached an advanced development status. Pilot plant operation has successfully demonstrated the safe handling and suitability of such waste products for final disposal in deep underground repositories. Models are available for predicting radionuclide transport between a salt rock repository and the biosphere via brine intrusion and ground-water flow.—Modified journal abstract.
