Summary:Regulatory, engineering, and performance assessment information was used to establish the technical basis for controlled area requirements. For the Palo Duro and Paradox basins, the dominant factor was the need to limit potential radionuclide release by ground-water flow. For the Richton Dome, the dominant factor was the need to limit the potential effects of solution mining on dome and repository integrity.—Modified journal abstract.
