Determination of background radiological characteristics within the Palo Duro Basin, Texas

Summary:Radon exhalation and ambient gamma dose rate measurements were made in two counties, Deaf Smith and Swisher, within this region. Soil samples were collected and analyzed for K-40, Sr-90, Cs-134, Cs-137, Pb-210, Po-210, Ra-226, Th-232 daughters, Am-241, and thorium, uranium, curium, and plutonium isotopes. No significant differences in radiological data were found between the two areas of interest. The results are typical of a natural background environment in which background radiation has been enhanced slightly by global atmospheric fallout.—Modified abstract.
