Summary:The entire region of Dhanbad district (Lat. 23°24'-24°04' N and Long, 86°04'-86°50' E) is dotted with a number of coalfields besides several major and minor industries. Intensive mining of fossil fuel and excessive disposal of industrial effluents and toxic substances into the land and water systems are reported to have affected the quality of groundwater of the region. An attempt has been made to study the geochemical characteristics of groundwater occurring in the region and assess its suitability for irrigation and drinking purposes.
