Summary:The main hydrodynamic and physicochemical mechanisms controlling the possibility of protection of water-bearing horizons from penetration of pollutants from the surface into the aeration zone are described. It is shown that the exhibition of the protective properties of cover deposits is due to their internal heterogeneity in many respects. The results of the theoretical analysis are confirmed by the examples presented from the domestic and foreign practice of hydrogeologic studies at concrete objects. In the methodical area, recommendations on the setting of field tests of the aeration zone represented by different lithological-structural types of rocks are elaborated.
